When ordering aircraft the RAF try to estimate how many flying hours they
will need over the amount of years that they wish the type to be in service.
This often works out to be more hours than individual airframes can meet so
extra aircraft are bought (this also allows for any attrition) and some are
usually left in storage at any one time. By carefully rotating the fleet in
and out of store the hours left on the frames can be managed to allow longer
use of the type.
